Good Night, starring K Manikandan and Meetha Raghunath in lead roles, has made its OTT debut on Disney+ Hotstar. The film was directed by Vinayak Chandrasekaran, who made his debut. Let's see how it goes.
Story:
Mohan (Manikandan) is an IT employee who lives a normal life with his family. But he is ridiculed by everyone because he snores. Mohan is also looked down upon by his boss (Bagavathi Perumal) because he does not speak English well. On the other hand, we see Anu (Meetha Raghunath), an orphan who works for an audit firm. Mohan and Anu meet unexpectedly and gradually fall for each other. Later Mohan marries Anu with his parents' consent. However, Mohan's snoring interferes with his marriage. What happened later? This is the crux of the story.
Plus Points:
The protagonist having a health issue is not a new concept, and we have seen many films like this in the past. What distinguishes Good Night is its natural and heartwarming approach to the subject matter. The director chose the "snoring" issue and wrote a clever screenplay around it, full of emotions and clean comedy.
The problems that people who snore have to deal with on a daily basis have been depicted realistically. The director did an excellent job of establishing the characters, which made us root for them. The conflict point comes at a critical point in the film, and from there, the story takes an emotional turn.
Every character is important, and credit must be given to the writer. The makers used the hero's sister role to demonstrate how societal expectations can affect married women in particular. Manikandan as Mohan is simply brilliant. His natural performance adds beauty to the film and allows us to empathise with him. The actor shines in the emotional outburst scenes.
Mudhal Nee Mudhivum. Nee fame. Meetha Raghunath as Anu is an ideal cast member, and you will instantly fall in love with her character. The way she depicted the innocence in her role demonstrates her talent. Her scenes with Manikandan turned out exceptionally well. Many of the film's scenes make us smile.
Ramesh Thilak played his part well. The climax sequence will leave you in splits. Healthy comedy is always enjoyable to watch, and Good Night does well in this regard. The creators also convey a lovely message: even the most serious life problems will have simple solutions.
Minus points:
The filmmakers could have cut down on the runtime, as the film feels a little long. The film occasionally slows down, and the editing team could have cut the length of a few sequences for a much better viewing experience.
Some scenes in the second half are repetitive and predictable. Although the emotions are handled sensibly for the most part, a few scenes could have been presented more effectively without cliches. The film is a lighthearted family drama that focuses on a health issue, so those expecting commercials and time pass may be disappointed.
Technical aspects:
Sean Roldan's delightful music flows seamlessly into the plot. Jayanth Sethu Mathavan's cinematography is excellent. The production design is neat, and the filmmakers spent what was necessary for the film. The editing in the first half was adequate, but it could have been improved in the second half.
Vinayak Chandrasekaran, the director, makes a good debut with Good Night. A simple story has been told effectively using a clever mix of comedy and emotions. Vinayak Chandrasekaran also elicited strong performances from the lead cast, making him the one to watch out for.
Verdict:
Overall, Good Night is a simple but adorable film about a common health issue. Manikandan and Meetha Raghunath give outstanding performances, and director Vinayak Chandrasekaran makes an impressive debut with this slice-of-life drama. However, the film is occasionally slow, and a few cliches could have been avoided. Nonetheless, if you enjoy watching lighthearted dramas, Good Night will be a pleasant viewing experience.
